A YouGov poll for First Rate Exchange Services undertaken in November 2009 shows 58% of British adults are planning go overseas this year, compared with 54% who were asked the same question in July 2009.
A further 22% are still considering their travel options.
This year, Londoners are the most likely to have an overseas holiday, with 68% intending to travel abroad. This compares with just 54% of people in the West Midlands, the least likely to take an international holiday this year.
The 18-24 age group is the most likely to embark on international travel, with 64% going on holiday in 2010. In contrast only 54% of 35-44 year olds will definitely take an overseas holiday, although 24% say they have still to decide.
Gordon Gourlay, managing director of First Rate, said: ‘It is of course good news for the travel industry that the majority of people intend to take at least one international break this year.
‘It appears, however, that in the early part of 2010 there may be greater demand for holidays which appeal to younger age groups, as many families are set to forgo their traditional break or intend to leave it until later in the year to decide whether finances will stretch to a holiday abroad.’
In terms of socio-demographic differences, 63% of ABC1s will be going abroad this year, compared with 53% of C2DEs.
The poll was carried out among 5,000 adults across the UK.
