Barrhead bypasses viewdata

06 Apr 2009
Barrhead Travel has launched a web-booking engine which connects directly with package operators, rather than going through viewdata networks.

The engine, powered by Amadeus-owned TravelTainment, uses ‘sub-second’ search technology to enable bookings to be made with 35 operators.

Julie Taylor, director of Barrhead Travel, said: ‘This is a really exciting opportunity, in particular because we are the first travel agent website in the UK to have direct connectivity to book with Thomas Cook amongst others.

‘TravelTainment technology provides the ability for our customers to find product quickly and book holidays using tour operators’ XML platforms and for us this was an important requirement.

‘We believe that the consumers’ choice of booking package product online has been to date restricted due to the old standard viewdata connections and until now there has not been an online solution available which can provide the level of functionality we needed.

‘With TravelTainment we have a system that can provide a quick and easy route to booking packages online.’

Colin Mckee, sales director for TravelTainment, added: ‘Our tie up with the main brand operators is a major step forward in providing the alternative to booking through viewdata.

‘The viewdata platform is essentially the way all other technology providers are connecting to book package holidays online and the combination of restricted technology and the viewdata connectivity makes the booking experience slower, more cumbersome and, in our view, unfriendly to the customers.

‘The direct connectivity we now have in place with operators systems along with our sub-second search technology is what makes TravelTainment unique in the market, resulting in a quick, easy and more pleasurable route to booking a holiday online which should ultimately increase conversions.

‘Currently we have over 70m package offers available for booking in our system from 35 operators. This will continue to grow as our strategy is clearly and firmly focused on further increasing product connectivity and distribution channels.’
