Flybe lands in top domestic spot

03 Jul 2009
Regional carrier Flybe has overtaken rivals to become the leading airline in terms of UK domestic passenger numbers.

The Flybe brand carried 26% of all UK domestic passengers that flew during April, ahead of easyJet with 23%.

Excluding franchise partner Loganair, Flybe still topped the table with 451,413 passengers, ahead of easyJet, British Airways, the bmi Group and Ryanair.

Flybe also carried more domestic passengers to and from Gatwick than any other airline.

Mike Rutter, Flybe chief commercial officer, said: ‘Just six years ago, Flybe was a distant fifth in the UK domestic market. It’s a mark of how far we’ve come that, in less than a decade, we’re now number one – a phenomenal achievement.’

It now serves 35 airports in the UK and continues to expand, with recent route additions including Gatwick to Newquay, Dusseldorf and Leeds Bradford.

In total, Flybe operates more than 140 routes, serving 13 countries from 65 departure points.
