ICAO aims to standardise carbon calculations

06 Jun 2008
The International Civil Aviation Organisation has launched a new standard for air passengers to calculate carbon emissions.

The United Nations body announced the standard yesterday, World Environment Day, which also saw a UN climate conference being held in Germany.

ICAO’s council president, Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez, said: ‘The world is watching and we must absolutely deliver on our mandate of producing an aggressive programme of action.’

The organisation will hold a workshop on 18-19 June at ICAO headquarters in Montreal, bringing together financial, industry and environment experts to discuss international civil aviation in a global carbon market.

The proliferation of individual airlines’ offsetting schemes means that ICAO wants its standard to become the main reference point for the industry.

It is intended that the ICAO calculator should be used as the primary tool for calculating aviation emissions for use in the UN’s Climate Neutral Initiative.

It would also be a source of data for use in carbon-offset programmes.
