Leaders count cost of swine flu

20 May 2009
Global travel leaders have called for an urgent review of the World Health Organisation's classification system in light of the swine flu outbreak.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) said WHO terminology designations are based on the geographic spread of the virus and not on its severity.

The WHO alert for swine flu is currently at phase five, with level six officially representing a pandemic. But delegates at the WTTC Global Travel and Tourism Summit in Brazil said the terminology was misleading.

WTTC president and chief executive Jean-Claude Baumgarten commented: ‘Every effort should be made to ensure we avoid unnecessary alarm.’

However, Geoffrey Lipman, assistant secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), said any potential second wave of the virus could affect the industry a lot more.

The overall impact of such a pandemic, according to research by the WTTC and Oxford Economics, could be losses of more than $2,200bn in the global travel economy, spread over late 2009 and into 2010.
