Orlando and Toronto next for Virgin America

18 Mar 2010
Virgin America will add daily non-stop services to Orlando from both Los Angeles and San Francisco on 19 August.

Fares from Los Angeles start at $149 and from San Francisco at $199.

The airline will also add six aircraft this year and a further three in the first quarter of 2011.

By this time next year, Virgin America’s fleet will have grown by almost one-third.

‘With strong financial performance, a new ownership structure and growth in fleet size, we're pleased to be able to expand to world-class destinations like Orlando and Toronto this year,’ said the airline’s president and chief executive, David Cush.

‘Both cities are major travel destinations from the West Coast, and we're looking forward to introducing our service to travellers in these and other new markets in 2010 and beyond.’

Virgin America is also seeking approval from the US Department of Transportation for its first international services.

Subject to such approval, the airline will begin daily non-stop services as early as June 2010 to Toronto Pearson International Airport from both Los Angeles and San Francisco.

To free up capacity for the new, ‘more lucrative’, long-haul routes, Virgin America will cease operations at John Wayne Airport, Orange County, California, from 26 May. All affected staff will be offered jobs elsewhere in the airline’s operations.

In addition to Orlando and Toronto, Virgin America intends to announce at least three more new destinations in 2010.

Separately, the airline unveiled a partnership with Morgans Hotel Group, allowing its 1.26m Elevate frequent flyer programme members to earn 1,000 points per stay at participating Morgans properties, to put towards free Virgin America flights.

The group’s hotels include the Morgans, Royalton and Hudson in New York, the Delano, Mondrian and Shore Club in South Beach, the Mondrian in Los Angeles, the Ames in Boston and the Clift in San Francisco.

‘We couldn’t be more pleased to partner with Virgin America,’ commented Kim Walker, senior vice president and creative director at Morgans Hotel Group.

‘This next-generation airline is hip and irreverent and a perfect match for our brand of innovative boutique properties.’

Launched in August 2007, Virgin America is a US-controlled, owned and operated airline and entirely separate from Virgin Atlantic.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group is a minority share investor in Virgin America.
