The figures from travel survey specialist Arkenford said nearly three-quarters (73%) of the UK population are reducing spend on their holidays this year, 'far more than recent research has suggested'.
However, the same percentage say the UK looks like a good holiday option this year and 20% are planning to book more short breaks at home than in 2008.
Thirteen UK destinations, including Skegness, feature on the top 20 places people have actually booked to go.
Over 90% have booked their accommodation in advance, with more than 50% of these bookings made online and bought directly from the provider.
For UK trips, recommendations from friends are the most important source of information, while printed brochures are most important for overseas trips.
These figures are revealed in Travel Navigator, a new national UK holiday survey launched by Arkenford, which quizzes 2,000 adults every month about their travel plans and booking intentions.
Ben Moxon, research director, said: ‘These figures are a reflection of the times. People are downsizing and also becoming increasingly independent and this will be food for thought for many operators.’
